About us — Barack & Szilva Restaurant

Barack & Szilva Restaurant has been welcoming guests since 2015 in the heart of Budapest's Jewish Quarter, at 13 Klauzál Street in the city's 7th district. It is a place where quality ingredients, time-honoured recipes and a warm, unhurried atmosphere come together to create a memorable evening.

The kitchen is led by György Gunst, whose decades of experience are present in every dish. Our menu focuses on the finest dishes of classic Hungarian cuisine — from goulash soup, stuffed peppers, roast duck, paprika chicken, grilled catfish and foie gras — prepared with real ingredients and genuine care. This is the authentic Hungarian food that visitors to Budapest are looking for.

Barack & Szilva is for those who want to experience real Hungarian cooking in Budapest — not a tourist trap, but a carefully run, personal restaurant where quality and atmosphere carry equal weight. The majority of our guests come from abroad: many visit us before or after exploring the Jewish Quarter, the Dohány Street Synagogue, or the famous ruin bars nearby.

Our cosy dining room, attentive service and live evening music together create the kind of special night that brings our guests back time and again. Tucked into a quieter corner of Klauzál Street, the restaurant feels at home both to local regulars and international visitors — from the moment they step through the door.

Barack & Szilva is not a chain or a franchise — it is a single, carefully run restaurant where every evening the only thing that matters is that our guests leave happy. Reservations can be made by phone (+36 30 258 0965) or email. We welcome guests every evening from 6 PM, Monday to Saturday

Live music — dulcimer every evening

A large part of what makes Barack & Szilva special is the live music that fills the restaurant in the evenings. Our resident dulcimer player performs regularly — and for our guests it quickly becomes clear that the cimbalom is not merely background music, but an experience in itself: an instrument that fills the room and sets the rhythm of the entire evening.

Hungarian folk melodies, film scores, jazz arrangements and the occasional operetta tune — the repertoire is wide and always shaped by the mood of the room and the wishes of the guests. Requests are welcome. It is not uncommon for a small spontaneous community to form around the music — Hungarian and international guests alike finding themselves drawn in.

Live music evenings are regular, but there is no obligation to engage — the sound of the dulcimer can just as well provide a beautiful backdrop to your dinner from a distance. If it is important to you that live music is definitely playing on the evening of your visit, we recommend checking when booking which evenings feature a performance.

What our guests say

★★★★★  Sarah M. | Google [English — tourist guest]

“Absolutely wonderful evening. The food was exceptional — we had the duck and the stuffed cabbage, both perfectly prepared. The dulcimer music was a magical touch that made the whole dinner feel special. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Budapest's Jewish Quarter.”

★★★★★  Thomas K. | Google [German — tourist guest]

“Ein authentisches ungarisches Restaurant mit tollem Flair. Das Essen war hervorragend, der Cymbalmspieler hat den Abend unvergesslich gemacht. Absolut empfehlenswert für alle, die echte ungarische Küche in Budapest suchen.”
